Kelley’s passion for horses developed at an early age. Like many young girls, her competitive career began in the pony ring and progressed to the children and junior hunters. Eventually her foray into the jumper ring began under the guidance of Jill Henselwood of Juniper Farms. While riding at Juniper Farms, Kelley excelled in the junior jumpers with her mare Esprit de Lys and the Equitation division with 007. The highlight of her junior career was the opportunity to represent Canada at the North American Young Riders competition aboard Esprit de Lys.
After the conclusion of her junior career, Kelley took a professional path with the goal of opening her own stable. That dream became a reality in 2009 when she and her husband David opened Cimarron Show Stables. While Kelley handles the riding and coaching duties, David oversees the day to day operations to ensure the farm runs smoothly.
And, as they have from the very beginning, Kelley's parents Doug and Lorraine Small were always there to encourage and support Kelley in every aspect of the business. Sadly Lorraine passed away in 2020 leaving Doug as Kelley's #1 supporter. Doug can always be found at ringside cheering on Kelley and her students with great enthusiasm.
One cannot introduce Kelley’s present mounts without a nod to the past. Kelley’s outstanding junior jumper mare Esprit de Lys, left behind a strong legacy at Cimmaron Show Stables. Her success in the ring was surpassed by her remarkable achievements as a broodmare. Esprit de Lys stamped her progeny with her feisty nature and extreme athleticism. Two of her most exceptional offspring, Blue's Yer Daddy and Lise, were born and raised at Cimmaron Show Stables.
Blue’s Yer Daddy is a big, impressive gelding by the Dutch Warmblood stallion Mr. Blue. His confident character is right in step with the incredible scope he inherited from both sides of his pedigree. Kelley has worked very hard to develop Blue’s natural ability and channel his incredible power to achieve success in the Grand Prix arena.
Not to be outdone by her big brother, Kelley’s second mount Lise (or “Miss Piggy” as she is affectionately known in the barn) is by the talented stallion Clinton. Barely 16 hands, what she lacks in height she more than makes up for in spirit. Lise was blessed with light, careful scope and an innate affinity for speed. A combination that makes her a threat every time she steps in the ring. Kelley has carefully managed Lise’s development to create a confident equine athlete with a refreshing enthusiasm for her job.
